Gaming genres
What are genres?
A video game genre is a classification assigned to a video game depending on its visual and interactivity of the game play. A video game genre is defined by the challenges and it's layout of the game, for example, the scenario of the game (setting), the style of it, music, sound effects and etc. The idea of assorting games in their categories are then identified by their conventions present in the genre. e.g fighting games are classified in action genre.
Conventions in action games that tells you it's genre has alot of bloodshed, dark colored outfits, graphics of the games are very tense so it is easy to tell the audience that this game is classified as a action game. Although the color of action games differentiates from horror games, the colors of horror games are more dull than action games. "Video game genre differs markedly from literary or film study due to the direct and active participation of the audience" (The Medium of the Video Game)
What are some of the challenges?
Most games fall within a particular category. Some bridges off different gaming styles and, could appear under more than one category simultaneously. And others pioneer new approaches to electronic entertainment. Those often fall outside of any pre-conceived genre. If such a title becomes popular enough that others try to duplicate the experience, a new genre is then formed.
